Buyuk ada is the largest of the princess Islands and has long been a favorite summer resort. In Byzantine times it and the others of the archipelago were the places of exile often also misery for members of the royal family who were out of favor. Well into the 20th century the population was mainly Christian; several unoccupied monasteries and churches reflect the history of past years. The gardens on Buyuk Ada, the grand old wooden houses, and the absence of cars give the island a relaxed atmosphere during the summer months. On the top of Yuce Tepe the highest point on Buyuk Ada, is the monastery of St.George, an inactive convent with chapels, tombs, a spring and a belfry. The convent may date back to the 6th century.

An hour's boat ride from the city center, this group of islands take their name from Byzantine times when the princes were sent there on exile. There are nine islands, five small and four relatively large. No motorboat is permitted, transport being provided by horse-drawn carriages. On the islands there are many glorious 19th century mansions with characteristic overhanging balconies, most of which are inhabited only during the summer.

The tour starts with a drive to the pier. On board the private deluxe motorboat, refreshments are served. Upon arrival on the largest of the islands, Buyukada, horse-drawn carriages take the guests on a tour of the island through the pine forest, riding next to picturesque bays and along the old villas. Lunch is served at a sea-side restaurant. Time is left to enjoy the cheerful local life on the village square. While cruising back to the city center, guitarists entertain on the motorboat.
